Warburg Institute

Als reicher Kaufmannssohn und ohne wissenschaftliche Ausbildung baute Aby Warburg um die Jahrundertwende zum 20. Jahrhundert seine Bibliothek in Hamburg auf. Mit seinem eigenen Klassifikationssystem hat er einen bedeutenden Beitrag für  Bibliothekswissenschaft und -geschichte geleistet. Einer ganzheitlich geisteswissenschaftlichend Idee entsprechend, ist die Bibliothek in einem runden Raum entlang der Wand aufgestellt. Sie soll so gemacht sein, dass man in der Umgebung eines Buches z.B. innerhalb der Philosophie alle anderen philosophischen Bücher zu einem ähnlichen Thema findet, aber auch in der Psychologie dasselbe Buch unter einem psychologischen Thema antreffen kann. Man findet ein Exemplar in der literaturwissenschaftlichen Sektion und vielleicht dasselbe Exempar auch in der Kunstsektion. Die Idee ist eine Idee der Moderne: die ganzheitliche Abbildung der geistigen Welt in einer Aufstellung, die für jeden Zusammenhang einen Standort bereithält. Und dies alles innerhalb eines im Kreis angeordneten Bestandes.

Das Institutsemblem (auch am Eingang, s. Foto unten) zeigt vier Elemente, aus denen die Welt besteht  (zwei Gegensatzpaare):

“Earth is linked to water by the common quality of cold, water to air by the quality of moisture, air to fire by heat and fire to earth by dryness.” (Quelle)

Davon abgeleitet werden die vier  Dimensionen: Handlung – Orientierung – Wort – Bild. Der Clou bei dieser Zuordnung ist die Zuordnung von Wissenschaften und Fachgebieten entsprechend der vier Kategorien. Kultur- und politische Geschichte (und deren Unterkategorien) werden mit Handeln,  Wissenschaft und Religion mit Orientierung, Literatur mit dem Wort und Kunst mit dem Bild verbunden. In diesem Obersystem gehen alle denkbaben geisteswissenschaftlichen Kategorien auf. Die Frage nach der richtigen Anordnung hat Warburg sein Leben lang umtrieben.

Zu den besonderen Schätzen (heute) zählen die Digitalen Quellen, mühsam digitalisierte Ikonographien, Handschriften oder  Stiche.  Warburg hat sich besonders für Zeichnungen von Festen,  Embleme, Rennaisancestiche, Fabelwesen oder mythologischen Darstellungen interessiert, die zum Teil aus dem 15. Jh. stammen.  Alle diese Digitalisate basieren auf Quellen, die zum Teil noch auf Warburgs eigenem Bestand gründen.  Die Digitalisate sind für nicht-kommerzielle Zwecke frei als pdf verfügbar. Nach Warburgs Tod wurde die Bibliothek vor den Nazis nach Londen gerettet, wo sie am Ende an die University of London angeschlossen wurde. Anschluss und andere Direktoren haben auch dazu geführt, das von der Kreisanordnung des Bestandes abgelassen werden musste. Warburgs Idee der kulturwissenschaftlichen Bibliothek lebt aber durch die BibliothekarInnen, die übrigens auch alle eine fachwissenschaftliche Ausbildung haben, als Ideal fort, das konnte man bei der Besichtigung spüren. Die Bibliothek sieht heute auf den ersten Blick wie jede andere Universitätsbibliothek aus. Die ursprüngliche Systematisierung könnte für den heutigen Nutzen nochmals untersucht werden.

It is not only cheap coffee, it is the idea of Londons’ Idea Stores that rocks. This one, the “reference” for good practice is placed in between a bazar, the Whitechapel tube-station, a bank and a supermarket.
Idea Stores are more than just public libraries (or are they public libraries like they should be?) because of their objective to integrate people. Here in Whitechapel especially migrants or non natives are getting a first connection to British Culture (health facilities, language, public services). Language learnig in “learning labs”, CV in 24 Hours, free debt advice service, or easy to read literature are some of the  services that are offered. Literature in the languages of most represented migrant groups are also on-hand.  The library is used as an Internet Café. One can use the touch screen to search the catalog. Here you are becoming beware of  the fascinating idea of a vital library. Beside from that: Have you ever been faling asleep in a library because of feeling tired? It is usual here in London while in German Libraries you are only allowed to sleep when you are too tired of massive scientific reading! Getting an idea about  the obvious difference?

right down to a buisy street of London. I’m sitting in the library of the “german historical institute london” located just across the british museum where I spent nearly all day yesterday with roboico. He gave me a tour around the institute this afternoon, as you maybe remeber he has an internship here. It’s quite impressive the premise of the institiute, an noble house with an imperial look like many other bulidings here in london. And the best part is that most of the room are packed wit books, three storeys of it, so the whole institute is for the most part a big library. What surprised me the most was the rather antique systems they use in the library. First of all are the “PI” prussian instruktions to catalouge the books and then the library system is an DOS based Allegro. Well if its working. But if yuo looking for some german history you’e in the right place because they have everything on german history, well one can expect from the name of the institute of course. And there is a nice cosy common room with leather chairs and many journals and newspaper one can choose from and where you can celebrate the famous english tee ceremony.
